about

A minimalist exploration in generative music and granular synthesis. Clean melodic lines with random pitch variation and tempo-synced delay feed the live input of a granular synthesizer, which adds a second voice that is lower, darker, and dirtier.

The origin is a patch built from scratch in Drambo using a single triangle oscillator with pitch quantized to a four-note scale, triggered in random order as the sequence progresses. The degree of random variation is a performance parameter, along with the length of decay in the clean-toned voice. Aside from the triggering of automated master volume fades using LK Matrix and a Launchpad, these are the only two performance parameters. The second synthesizer at work is FRMS, which uses granular synthesis combined with FM, adding the low growling drone. FRMS is receiving live input directly from the random pitch voice. Using an internal LFO, the grain offset (start point) and size are modulated gradually over time, along with filter cutoff. FRMS with its internal reverb engaged also runs into the Eventide Blackhole. The piece is about listening to the interaction of the two randomly modulated voices, following the position of the slow moving LFO on FRMS, and making very minor interventions to the source melodics.

Recorded as a live performance directly from Drambo on the iPad to a stereo track on an Olympus LS-14 digital recorder. Mastered in T-Racks.
