about

Marin Mersenne was a French mathematician born in 1588, known for his work with prime numbers. The namesake Mersenne FM bell synthesizer for iOS by iceGear is featured in this piece. Tapping into classic Jamaican rocksteady vibes, Mersenne is used on three parts - bass, rhythm, and lead, while Ruismaker FM provides drum set and percussion. SynthMaster One adds a second synth lead voice which at times conjures tones of Japanese music. Basslines are semi-randomly generated with Riffer, and percussion hits are triggered at chance intervals by Poly 2, and played though the Dubstation 2 delay and Stratmosphere Cloud Reverb for spacious dub-style effect. Rozeta LFO modulates the tone of Mersenne on backing rhythm chords, and another instance of LFO brings the two lead voices in and out of the mix, which share a 16 bar melodic line recorded to midi pattern in Atom Piano Roll using an electric mandolin. Another instance of Atom is used to modulate chords of the bass and rhythm parts together for an alternating I-IV progression. Human performance is the stopping and starting of the sequencers in AUM. The piece was recorded as a live jam (in a camper on the Eastern Shore of Virginia) and mixed on-the-fly to a single stereo track in AUM, then mild compression applied in Ableton Live.
